WAHS students will sell Little Free Libraries

Posted on: November 2, 2016

If your neighborhood needs a Little Free Library, you can purchase one from West Albany High School students later this month. The Little Free Libraries are constructed by students in Jeff Hawkins’ trades class and decorated by art students in Babette Grunwald’s art class.

Mr. Hawkins expects to charge $300 for a new, decorated structure. If you are interested, email him at jeff.hawkins@albany.k12.or.us.

Read more about the project in the Democrat-Herald.

Some Oregon schools defy odds to succeed, some persist in failure

By Betsy Hammond | The Oregonian/OregonLive

“Schools with the highest ratings in every or nearly every category, particularly in student growth and high school graduation rates, include West Linn, Lakeridge and Clackamas high schools, Lake Oswego, Sherwood and Happy Valley middle schools, and elementary schools in well-off neighborhoods of Lake Oswego, Portland and West Linn.

Also among them: Philomath High, in a scrappy former timber town near Corvallis; perennial superstar West Albany High; and up-and-comers Elmira and Wilsonville highs.”

West Albany High School has joined the Little Free Library movement! Mrs. Grunwald’s art classes have teamed with Mr. Hawkins’ woods classes to build, decorate, and install two Little Free Libraries on the WAHS campus — one at either end of the front of the building on Queen Ave SW. The Little Free Libraries have been initially stocked with titles donated by the WAHS library, but the community is encouraged to either take a book to read, or to add a book to pass on to others. Enjoy!
