The Oregon Department of Education has released the school and district report cards for 2018-2019; you can find the WAHS report card here, and report cards for the district and other schools on the district site.
West Albany High School’s 98% graduation rate is the highest in the state for a school with enrollment between 1,000 and 1,500.
Students may apply now if they are graduating between July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020. Most students must apply DURING their senior year (prior to graduation), or immediately after GED® test completion. Use the Find Your Deadline tool to determine your deadline.

Change to Deadlines for GED® Applicants: OSAC has made a slight change to the Oregon Promise deadlines starting this fall. The GED® applicant deadlines are now on the 10th of the month (rather than the 5th of the month). The GED® deadlines are now March 10, July 10, and Dec. 10. All other Oregon Promise deadlines remain the same.
Please remember that the student drop-off / pick-up area is at the front of the school; parents should turn off of Liberty St. into the driveway closest to Queen to drop students off.
Please do not use the driveway between West Albany and Memorial OR the Liberty Street entrance to drop students off or pick them up. The resulting combination of cars making U-turns, buses, students and staff members parking, and students crossing back and forth between the schools on foot creates a significant safety hazard.

SUMMER HAS BEEN extremely busy for construction bond projects, with activity at eighteen school sites and two district facilities. The largest challenges for the summer has been a number of unforeseen conditions at the middle schools, but those projects should be completed for the start of school with one exception, the locker rooms at North Albany Middle School.
The major good news of the summer is the completion of Oak Grove Elementary, the replacement school for the old Oak Grove building, which will open before school starts on August 29 with a public ribbon cutting ceremony and self guided tour. Please join us at 3:30 p.m.
Meadow Ridge Elementary is a brand new school for 600 students and is about three quarters through construction, with a completion date in early 2020.
The big middle school projects are the upgrades to Memorial and North Albany’s CTE spaces. Memorial received a modification of an existing science, leadership, food science, and communications classroom to create a new science lab, fabrication lab, maker space, and digital lab. North Albany Middle is having existing an art classroom and four other classrooms modified into CTE labs and a classroom.
SAHS Auxiliary Gym
The bond projects for South Albany High School include the development of an auxiliary gym, theater upgrades, and the renovation of career technical education (CTE) classrooms, including the addition of new CTE spaces. Completion is scheduled for 2020.
At West Albany High School, the developments will relieve crowding with the construction of an auxiliary gym, CTE spaces, a student commons, and an auditorium, which will be available for use by the entire district. Completion in Fall 2020.
Critical facility upgrades continued in Summer 2019, which included projects such as new roofing, restroom remodels, the replacement of water lines, etc.

El verano ha sido extremadamente ocupado para proyectos de bonos de construcción escolar, con actividad en dieciocho escuelas y dos instalaciones del distrito. Los mayores desafíos para el verano han sido una serie de condiciones imprevistas en las escuelas secundarias, pero esos proyectos deben completarse para el comienzo de clases, con una excepción, los vestuarios de la escuela secundaria North Albany Middle School.

In Portland Business Journal’s ranking of top high schools in Oregon, West Albany High School once again makes the list! The rankings are based on eight factors: academics, culture and diversity, parent/student surveys, teachers, clubs and activities, health and safety, resources and facilities, and sports.
ON THE 9TH of July, the two newly elected school board members of GAPS, Michael Thomson and Eric Aguinaga, were sworn in by Board Chair Ward in a special session.
Eric AguinagaAs a longtime Albany resident, husband, father, and businessman, Eric Aguinaga has learned our community is only as great as the time we invest in it. With his experience as a United States Air Force Veteran and as a former commercial sales representative, he brings a unique background and skill set to the school board.
Eric understands and appreciates the hard work in which our community is founded on and enjoys spending his time volunteering with the Albany Public School Foundation, Albany Carousel, Albany Aquatics Association, Jackson Street Youth Services, and serving on the GAPS School Board.
Michael ThomsonMichael Thomson grew up in Washington and graduated from Evergreen State College in Olympia, where he worked at the capitol. He and his wife have lived in Albany for twelve years, serving on city committees and with non-profit organizations, including the Central-Takena PTA. They are also active at St. Mary’s Parish.
Growing up with parents who were school teachers, Michael has always had an interest in public education, and since his daughter has been attending school, he has been heavily involved at GAPS. His wish and goal for all GAPS kids is for them to have as many positive experiences as his daughter has had.

Eric AguinagaEric Aguinaga, residente de Albany desde hace mucho tiempo, esposo, padre y hombre de negocios, ha aprendido que nuestra comunidad es tan buena como el tiempo que invertimos en ella. Veterano de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos y ex representante de ventas comerciales de Les Schwab, aporta a la Mesa Directiva conocimientos y habilidades únicas.
Eric comprende y aprecia el arduo trabajo en el que se basa nuestra comunidad y disfruta pasar su tiempo como voluntario en la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Albany, el Carrusel de Albany, la Asociación Acuática de Albany, los Servicios Juveniles de Jackson Street y el servir en la Mesa Directiva de GAPS.

THE ALBANY ELKS Lodge #359 has been a strong supporter of GAPS students and GAPS is thankful for their generosity and benevolence. Last year they obtained a grant for school supplies for low income students; this year, they obtained a grant from the Elks National Foundation for disposable menstrual products for low income K-12 students. All the supplies have been ordered and will be distributed during registration day.
To inquire about the availability of these products and additional resources, please see your school during registration. These are free products, a gift from Albany Elks Lodge, and no student will be denied access while supplies last. Thank you, Albany Elks Lodge!
In addition, Greater Albany Public Schools will have disposable menstrual product dispensers installed in every secondary education building, in all the girls’ restrooms and gender neutral restrooms. These facilities are expected to be installed before winter break, of the 2019/20 school year.
