The Whirlwind is the student-run news publication of West Albany High School. Student journalists report, write, edit, and design the 32-page newsmagazine, which is distributed six times per year. They also publish written and multimedia stories on whaswhirlwind.com. Inquiries about advertising in the magazine, story ideas, letters to the editor or corrections can be sent to wahswhirlwind@gmail.com. Alternatively, you may also contact faculty adviser Michelle Balmeo at michelle.balmeo@albany.k12.or.us.
I want to become a student journalist. How do I join?
You can either take the semester course Intro to Journalism, which is offered each fall, or you can speak to the adviser, Ms. Balmeo, and express your interest. Older students or students with specific qualifications may be able to bypass the Intro to Journalism pathway requirement. Stop by C-9 to get your questions answered.
How do I advertise in the Whirlwind?
It’s easy! Simply complete the advertising form, and return it to a student staff member with payment, or mail it to the school (address available on form).
Can I support The Whirlwind in other ways?
Yes! We accept sponsorships and subscriptions that pay for our printing and web hosting costs. You can also support the news staff by following their social media accounts and regularly visiting the website.
